The first thing worth establishing is what is feeding the unit, because this shire runs three different arrangements and they fail in different ways.
On the rural blocks the hot water is frequently LPG, fed from a pair of 45kg bottles. The single most common no-hot-water call out that way is not a fault at all, it is an empty bottle, and it costs nothing to check the changeover regulator before booking anyone. LPG also runs dearer per unit of energy than mains gas, which is worth factoring in when a system is due for replacement rather than discovering across a year of bottle swaps.
On mains gas and electric the story is the ordinary one, and it comes down to the anode. It is a sacrificial rod that corrodes so the steel tank does not, and when it is gone the cylinder is on its own. Almost nobody replaces one, which is the biggest avoidable cost on this page anywhere in Sydney.
One local qualification worth being honest about: this is higher, cooler ground than most of Sydney, and the valleys out toward Galston and Arcadia get genuinely cold mornings. Heat pumps work by pulling warmth out of the surrounding air, so their efficiency does drop when that air is cold. They remain a good option here and the space to site one properly is rarely a problem, but the brochure running costs assume milder conditions than a July morning up here.


If you are on bottles, glance at the changeover regulator before you call. An empty bottle looks exactly like a broken hot water system and costs nothing to rule out.
The most common no-hot-water call on the rural fringe is an empty bottle, and it is genuinely worth ruling out before anyone is booked. A changeover regulator with an indicator will usually tell you at a glance.
Two bottles on an automatic changeover is the arrangement that prevents this becoming an emergency: when one empties the regulator switches over and you have time to order a swap. A single bottle, or a manual changeover nobody watches, is how a Sunday gets ruined.
Bottled gas generally costs more per unit of energy than reticulated natural gas. That does not make gas hot water wrong on a rural block, but it does mean the long-run figures differ from what a mains-connected household would see.
So when a unit is due for replacement out there, the comparison worth doing is not just purchase price. It is purchase plus running cost across the life of the unit, and that sometimes points at electric or heat pump where it would not in town.
Inside every storage tank is a magnesium or aluminium rod that corrodes in place of the steel. It does its job right up until it is consumed, and then the cylinder is exposed.
Checking it is a small job. Replacing it is bigger but far cheaper than a changeover, and on a sound tank between five and ten years old it is usually the best money you can spend. We will tell you honestly when a tank is too far gone to be worth it.

Most hot water advice quietly assumes mains gas is available. Across a good part of this shire it is not, and that removes an option before the conversation starts.
Where there is no mains gas the real choice is between LPG, electric storage and a heat pump, and it turns on running cost rather than purchase price. Space is not the constraint here that it is closer to the city, which widens the field usefully.

Past twelve years on a storage tank you are generally looking at a corroded cylinder, which has no repair. We will give you both numbers honestly rather than steering you at the bigger invoice.
